2013 Report

The 10th annual Bellarine Rail Trail run, organised by Geelong Athletics in conjunction with the Bellarine Railway, was held on Sunday August 18 and attracted almost 300 runners.  This is a unique free non-competitive training run usually attracting runners planning to compete in the Melbourne half or full marathons in October. On offer was a 34km run from Queenscliff to Drysdale and return or a one way 17km run starting in Drysdale. Many of those running one way opted to take the steam train to the Drysdale start that added much colour to the event and provided plenty of excitement for the youngsters who came along.

108 runners completed the longer journey including Knox Athletics’ Ben Toomey who is hoping to run under 2hrs 20mins at the Frankfurt Marathon on Oct 27. Whilst Toomey looked untroubled throughout and ran a further 4kms after crossing the finish line, others found it a long day out after battling a gale force headwind on the outward uphill trip to Drysdale. The 17km runners however enjoyed being blown the entire way to Queenscliff. Usually pushing a pram is a disadvantage, however the winds were so strong that it could almost be argued that well known personal trainer Brent Durran had an advantage in sailing down the track with son Levi! Post run, many runners headed to Gusto Café to enjoy a well earned feed.

The run will return on Sunday August 17, 2014. Time to start training now!
